How many times have you focused on something you wanted so much that when you get it, it isn’t how you thought it was? Oftentimes you set huge expectations for a specific situation, you get excited, then reality comes and ends up totally different than what you expected. Disappointment comes and your level of happiness goes down.
Then, why do we have expectations in the first place when expectations don’t always turn out as the reality we wanted? Is there a connection between our happiness, the expectations we have, and our reality?
Happiness is the difference between our expectations and reality.
There are some things that may be out of your control, like weather, traffic, other people’s reactions, and their moods. But there is something you do have control of and it is your reaction to any situation.
Some people are naturally wired to be a little bit happier and more positive mindset than others. Some can tend to be more negative, or trepidatious, or just a little more pensive in their approach to things. The fewer expectations we have in our head, the less pressure that we put on a situation, the less that we overthink things, or build it up in our heads, the better.
Easier said than done, that’s for sure. What I’m saying is, you’ll always have positive expectations about the future because well, what’s the point right? Once you get what you’ve been desiring or once you get what you want, take a moment to really appreciate it, even if it didn’t turn out exactly as you planned it. Appreciation and gratitude are the keys to being at peace with any situation. Going along with the flow of things and being more in the moment, grateful for the things that you’ve achieved, even if they took longer or are not exactly like you imagined, that’s the key to happiness.
If we just let things happen the way that they should, we trust that we are making good decisions, we are surrounding ourselves with good people, we are doing the right thing every single day, then let’s try to not make things bigger in our head than they need to be. Your happiness is what you can control, let reality unfold, and trust that you are a strong leader and you’re making good decisions.
It’s a powerful thing to understand that you are in control of your happiness, you create your own life, when you realize that, and that you deserve all the good things you’ve envisioned for yourself, everything will start to fall into place.
Give it a try, take this moment to just breathe, and think of the things you’re grateful for, either big or small, make it a daily practice and you’ll see the difference in your life.
