Business owners may easily fall into a pattern of having days of endless activities that make them lose focus on the essential things. Specifically, the things they are passionate about.
Let’s face it, no one has time to do everything. You cannot fit everything in no matter how efficient you become. So, if you must prioritize and choose from your endless list of tasks, let’s do it the correct way. Ask yourself this: What fuels you vs. what drains you? How do you stay motivated and focused on your priorities? Remember, passion is energy, and focusing on the things we are passionate about leads to a fulfilling life and business.
We have a great pulse check to do for yourself and your business.
How do you do it?
Take out a piece of paper and do a basic T-chart. On one side, write what fuels you, and on the other side, what drains you. The idea is to identify those activities that excite you the most, that fill you with energy and joy. Remember why you decided on your business. What is it that you love about it? What motivates you to spend hours reading and doing research? What makes you brainstorm with your team? The goal is to make sure you are always focused on the things that are the highest and best use of your time.
The things that fuel you are what you should focus on and do more of. In contrast, you need to let go of the tasks that don’t bring you joy, delegate anything that is draining your life and business right now. Burnout is real and will happen if you continue doing things that take the energy out of you.
Once you have created a substantial list of what fuels you, find ways to integrate each task into your daily routine. Do you like to drink your cup of coffee in a quiet place? Do a 30-minute walk in the morning? Meditate? Go to the gym? I promise you will soon find yourself riding a wave of excitement that lifts you up and makes life truly worth living. You will feel motivated to do more and do it better.
There is a lot of overwhelm in business right now, but those who are putting in the time to discern between what fuels you and what drains you are making huge strides towards a more joyful life and successful business. Because the secret is this: if you are passionate about it, it will never feel like work!
