Looking for the perfect person to hire within your organization? From small businesses to multinational companies, everyone at some point needs to set a hiring process or system when filling a new position. Do you know each step needed to find the right candidate? Do you follow a set hiring process every time you need a new team member? Let me help you with that.
Sometimes I’ve seen that business owners and recruiters are on the lookout for the magic wand. That perfect, talented person that magically appears and solves all their problems. Someone that can do all the things that they need in their business.
Let’s say you are looking for someone in Marketing. When you’re looking for a Marketing specialist, you might think this person is going to do PR, social media, advertising, outreach, customer engagement, all of it. For most of us, that is marketing, so we truly think one person, in one role, can do all of it. But what if you take that huge role and break it down into individual tasks or activities. You’ll most likely discover a few different positions or roles, such as a copywriter, a person who posts on social media, a content engagement specialist, and another person who can conduct marketing conversion, monitoring, and analytics, to name a few.
It can also happen in an operations role. Many of the retail businesses I work with at the moment have delivery requirements, so they’re always seeking someone who can handle a variety of tasks in the store as well as run and arrange deliveries. So if we break down that position into different activities, it may look like a quality and control agent, a logistics coordinator, and a customer service specialist, plus someone that manages deliveries. When you break down the job into unique new roles, different segments, they will most likely perform better.
How do you do it?
Before you start the hiring process, take a moment to understand what work needs to get done and always examine if perhaps some of the responsibilities of the new hire can be split among your current team.
Start by analyzing:
- What tasks need to be completed?
- What specific responsibilities are going to be attached to this position?
- Which skill sets will be necessary?
Take some time and dissect the role, breaking down that position into different job roles. There are different types of hires and different access companies to hire new talent at the moment. For instance, some are 1099 and virtual assistants, so if you are strategic and find all the positions together, you will find your magic wand. That’s where the magic happens.
Try and get out of the traditional way of hiring in your business. Avoid hiring one person to do all the tasks and instead, break down the position into different roles so that your team and business can work better.
