In every aspect of our lives and at any given time we are faced with some kind of change. It is inevitable. Sometimes it’s not easy but resisting change comes down to one thing: fear of the unknown.
Even if we have all the information and analyze all the possible outcomes, some things are impossible to predict, and that is what makes it scary. We do not only fear the negative changes like losing our biggest client or facing a health crisis. The positive changes, even the ones we actively pursue and want, can also be scary for us.
Change is usually accompanied by a myriad of emotions, from fear and anxiety to happiness and joy. These emotions keep us from taking that next step which can, on some occasions, be harmful to our business. Resisting change can mean we do not move forward or evolve.
Are you “team resistance to change”, holding on to old processes and procedures for too long? or do you look forward to changing and evolving?
Sometimes something happens that forces us to realize we are resisting change, giving us the opportunity to make some adjustments and redirect the path we were taking.
I want you to take a moment and think about this past week. Maybe there is a certain situation that happened where you were not being open-minded. And you finally gave in while kicking and screaming. Sounds familiar? Or maybe you can identify a situation where you pioneer change within your team, embracing every new option presented to you.
It is not easy for everyone to embrace changes, but here are four things you can do to work on overcoming the fear. They will help you be more aware of your behavior and take matters into your own hands.
So, how can we overcome resistance to change?
- Being aware. Take a moment to analyze your first reaction to a situation.
- Listen to your team and/or family: engaging with your inner circle can bring more clarity to any issue.
- Breaking it down into stages. You can tackle any situation or project if it’s broken into baby steps.
- Good communication is the key. Sharing the outcome with everyone involved will keep you away from misunderstandings and stress.
Changes will happen to everyone many times in a lifetime, both in our personal lives and in our professional journey, so don’t be afraid to reach out for help. Many of my scheduled coaching sessions lean towards this topic, and I assure you this is a safe space for you to unload. We have a judgment-free zone here for you to process this or any other topic you wish to share with me.
Feel free to schedule a 20-minute call and let’s get started! And when you do, if you have not taken the Core Values Index, you will get a copy of the CVI.
