Episode 201. Express Tip #101: Nobody Wins Who Is Afraid of Losing

Annette Walter

The success of your business begins with your mindset. It begins with the belief that your knowledge, talents, and wisdom can be developed through effort, patience, and persistence.

“Nobody wins who is afraid of losing”

This quote really struck me, so I decided to share it with you. Initially, when I heard it, I didn’t even necessarily think about it in the context of business. Instead, I thought about the sports my kids play weekly, moving towns, buying a new house, and something simple like trying a new recipe for Friday night dinner.

But then, I thought about the risks we take to scale and grow a company.

It is undeniable that this quote is about mindset and fear of failure. Think about it like this: if you are not willing to participate in the game, you can’t win. There will always be a possibility that you can lose but your focus should be on how to win

The mental game must come first, and you need to keep your mind on your goal. If you are trying too hard to win but you have that fear of losing in the back of your mind, it will hold you back.

Yes, in business there is so much more to lose. But to take your company to the next level and scale your business you must take risks.

How to have a winning mindset?

  1. Set and know your goal: The most important part of having a winning mindset is to define a clear goal. Know what you really want and be sure about your purpose.
  2. Practice and Consistency: Have you heard about “consistency is key”? It’s not just a popular quote, having consistency in anything business related (creating content, sending emails, marketing your products, making new products, etc)  creates the momentum your business needs to grow and scale
  3. Be confident that your goal(s) can be achieved: Believe in yourself, your team, and your ideas. You got those ideas for a reason and you can bring them to fruition.
  4. Determination and resilience: Entrepreneurship is not a sprint race, it’s not an overnight success no matter what some people may advertise. Be patient with your results, learn from your mistakes and keep on evolving.  Go for it and do not stop until you’re done.

If you ask an athlete participating in the Olympics what’s on their mind 24/7 they will tell you it’s the gold and getting that first place. Plain and simple. During training time, during downtime. Everything they do, it’s done with only that gold medal in mind. What they eat, how much they rest, everything. The winning mindset!

Every entrepreneur’s journey is different, every single one includes decision-making and risk-taking. It cannot be avoided. Sometimes you may find yourself standing on the edge of the cliff, not sure which direction to take your business, what new service to provide, or which product to launch first.

Even during a hiring process, there comes a point where you may need to take a risk. Should you go with the most experienced option? Or maybe with the young, more creative ready-to-take-the-world candidate?

It is part of life, risks must be taken for you to evolve. But if all your focus is on your fears, you are keeping yourself back.

Remember, nobody wins who is afraid of losing. Is it hitting you as hard as it hit me? It struck a chord with me, and I think it’s so important to remember to keep a winning mindset.

Give yourself permission to take risks, try new things, learn, fail, grow and evolve. You get to test your limits and go beyond what you believed was possible. Go after the things you want!
