Episode 206. Express Tip #103: The Importance of a Unique Voice in Your Business

Have you ever had someone coach your kids or teach your kids and they simply listen to that person better than they listen to you? I see you nodding your head right now. 

It’s a powerful thing. They will listen to the coach, the teacher, or the tutor, or even sometimes a mentor, babysitter, or another friend’s parent better than they listen to me as the parent. 

Here’s what’s interesting. Lately, I’ve been coaching business owners’ teams. And it has been very effective and impactful, so today I’m going to talk to you about how I coach business owners’ teams

Sometimes when your team hears a different voice, and an objective viewpoint, they listen, open up, and absorb things better. They may have that “aha moment” which makes having a different voice in your organization beyond successful. 

So what I’ve been doing is, I’ve been coaching my clients once a month, privately one to one. And then at the end of the month, I lead their leadership teams meeting. 

Okay, so what does that look like? 

First, we do a one-word check-in and everyone shares a win. 

Second, we go through what’s working and what’s not working at the moment. From the session I just had with the business owner, I have heard and understood where they need help and support. So we identify processes and systems that either are not working or they have outgrown. We also identify if there has never been a set process or system for a specific project

Third, we set, tweak, improve and redefine swimlanes. We make sure everyone through the use of the Core Values Index is in the right seat on the bus. If not, we define and redefine the swim lanes so they can be as productive as possible. 

Fourth, we identify certain KPIs that each team member needs to be responsible for. And these aren’t your traditional types of KPIs, these are specific and unique to what each team member is in charge of

It is such powerful work that I wanted to dedicate a full Express Tip and a Blog post to this process.
