Have you heard about the 48 hour rule?
It’s when you, as the CEO and leader of your business, try to imagine having 48 hours to get your company ready for a year without you. It’s when you pretend you’re going on a year-long trip without access to your phone, email, or internet. You won’t be able to check in with your team during the entire time. So you have 48 hours to delegate your tasks, prepare everybody to make sure all the standard operating procedures, processes, and systems stay in place, and hire, if necessary.
Scared?
Would your company survive for a year without you?
This is an excellent exercise to go through every once in a while because you realize what you need to stop doing in your business. You will see where you need to delegate, cross-train, let things go, and set standard operating procedures. Yes, one of your goals should be that your business can function without you.
Does someone in your company need to know how to do what you do in your business? The answer is yes. It’s essential because that is what scaling and growing is about.
As a leader, I am going to continue to press you to get out of the weeds of your business because I know you are curious. I want you to keep on growing and evolving. Also, taking a vacation without worrying if your business will crumble down without you sounds nice, right?
So go through this exercise. You can do it any Friday in the afternoon, maybe when you’re having your CEO day. Have you read that blog? Two tips to manage your time more efficiently.
Don’t be afraid to let go. Don’t be afraid to train and hire new team members to help you grow. This is what will elevate you and keep on helping you and your team evolve.
